They Don't Teach Corporate in College (Alexandra Levit)

by Robert Luciani 12. April 2010
This book is about readjusting to the corporate world after having spent years preparing for it at university.

The strange thing is, when you start at your new workplace, your work day isn't 4-hours of monologues.. You're not entitled to promotions just because you do what's required.. Most importantly though, nobody cares how fast you can implement an arbitrary data-structure in your favorite programming language. If you don't understand the underlying motivations of a business, climbing the corporate ladder will be nigh impossible.

While at this stage in my career I found a lot of the advice given in this book to be "common sense", it was still nice to see it in writing. A lot of its best parts were paraphrased and inspired by the material of respected "self-improvement" authors such as Stephen Covey, Camille Lavington, Hendrie Weisinger. So it definitely gathers lot of insight and sound advice into one place. However, for the sake of brevity, all chapters end right before delving too deeply into any one topic.

I would recommend this book as an excellent starting point for people in their 20's that want to work at a global corporation and have enough insight to know... that they don't know. If you catch my drift. ;)
